The Outer Worlds is a Single-player Sci-Fi RPG video game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Private Division. It was released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One (Game Pass) on October 25, 2019. The Nintendo Switch version was released on June 5, 2020. A DLC called Peril on Gorgon was released on September 9, 2020. A second DLC, Murder on Eridanos, is scheduled for release in 2021.
Development history
Development of Outer Worlds began sometime before the acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment by Microsoft in 2018; Private Division had also managed to secure the publishing rights before the purchase.
Game development is spearheaded by Fallout creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky. Outer Worlds, as a result, is heavily inspired by the Fallout franchise with many carry-over elements.

Story
The Stranger, also known as "The unknown variable", is a passenger aboard the colony ship Hope, which is heading to the distant Halcyon system, wholly owned and operated by corporations. During his voyage, the ship's skip drive fails and he is forced to continue using his sublight engines, extending the voyage from ten years to sixty. Since Halcyon was colonized by other means, Hope unexpectedly finds herself adrift with her settlers unable to be revived and the Corporate Board of Halcyon Holdings decided to abandon the settlers. Hope goes into orbit over the frozen planet Typhon and its existence is hidden.

To counter this, the Board commissioned its lead scientists to develop whatever means necessary, such as a powerful appetite suppressant, derived from raptidons. This suppressant was supposed to be used in toothpaste form and would supposedly reduce the amount of resources people consume, thus buying scientists time to come up with a more permanent solution.
Combat
The Outer Worlds is a first person shooter with RPG elements. Players are given a skill called "Tactical Time Dilation" that allows you to slow down time in the game and increase damage.
A pacifist path was planned and designed for the game, however, due to the bugs introduced (specifically in mission handling), many elements have been removed to ensure that the game is playable and production is scheduled. It has been confirmed that a pacifist career is not necessarily impossible; since a tester has managed to complete an almost pacifist career.
